Quick answer

A clear, respectful guide to everyday behaviour, temples, transport and public situations.

A clear, respectful guide to everyday behaviour, temples, transport and public situations. This guide focuses on practical decisions, common failure points and the official checks to make before acting.

1

Do follow the room

Observe local behaviour, dress neatly when the setting is formal, remove shoes when signs or hosts indicate, queue calmly and ask before photographing a person or ceremony. A polite greeting and patient tone matter more than performing unfamiliar gestures perfectly.

2

Do treat religious spaces carefully

Cover shoulders and knees where requested, keep voices low and follow posted photography rules. Sit without pointing feet at sacred images or people. Never climb on, pose disrespectfully with or handle Buddha images and religious objects for a novelty photograph.

3

Do not turn uncertainty into confrontation

Public anger usually makes a misunderstanding harder to resolve. Pause, clarify the price or rule, use translation if needed and involve the appropriate official channel for a serious dispute. Never surrender a passport as casual security for a rental transaction.

4

Do not ignore legal and road risks

Drug laws are severe, vaping rules and import restrictions require current checking, and a foreign licence alone may not be sufficient to drive. Wear helmets and seat belts, avoid impaired travel, and do not assume insurance covers an unlicensed motorcycle ride.
